CERAMICS - A TECHNICAL DIARY
MATERIAL:
We use earthenware or stoneware clay, buff earthenware with grog or grogged Terracotta (these have grog in them, which is ground, already-fired ceramic material. This gives the clay strength and body.
Clay has water in it, it dries out with handling and is less workable, less malleable. Claywork needs to be stored in a damp environment preferably airtight if it is to be worked on over a prolonged time, for example over a period of several art lessons. A good way to store it is in a sealed plastic bag with a small piece of damp sponge or cloth inside.
Slip is a paste created by mixing water with a lump of the clay and it is used to help bond areas to be joined.
