YEAR 8 AFRICAN MASKS CHALLENGE

Work in a team copy everyone’s contribution and everyone will be able to raise themselves up in their different levels. If someone doesn’t pull their weight, they’ll drag you all down! Everyone in the team must have at least one challenge.

Your team challenges: (a page per answer at least)

    Create a beautifully illustrated design brief page.

    On one of the blank maps of Africa fill in all the countries and label.

    On another blank map show the different climate areas (The African continent has many different climates and types of land. The environments range from Savannah (grassland with few or scattered trees) to rain forest, from high mountains to flat plains. Vocabulary: Savannah, rain forest, plains, ethnic groups, Sub-Saharan, non- sedentary/sedentary.

    A page demonstrating your answer to why different environments are a factor leading to the variety of art types produced in Africa.

    What were masks in Africa used for? What is a masker? What is a masquerade? Vocabulary: functional, initiate, raffia, context, "out of context," masker, masquerade, ancestor, fertility

    Show an example of a mask, describe its context. Vocabulary: ideal beauty, stylized, realistic, naturalistic, abstract, symbol, emphasis, scarification, prestige.

    Show an example of a mask that had a function and describe how its appearance reflected it. Look for a nail figure, a funeral mask or similar.
