Year 9 3D Project. The Green Man
.TASK:
From your investigations of gargoyles and the legendary Green Man, design and make a gargoyle or Green Man image of your own. The ceramic piece could be a ‘self-portrait’ gargoyle or ‘humanoid’ Green Man, a fantasy animal gargoyle or terrifying Gothic beast. Think about the creatures that have been used for inspiration, bats, lizards, demons, eagles and lions perhaps creating a hybrid creature.
Introduction:
Who is the Green Man? During this project you will investigate different styles of Green Men. Using your favourite style you will produce a large Ceramic Plaque. You will work in relief, with on-laid and impressed decoration. You will also use plaster moulds.
Objectives:
To show a personal response to a theme.
To develop skills in portrait drawing.
To record from direct observation.
To analyse a theme, selecting, researching and communicating relevant
information, continually evaluating and annotating.
To select and control a range of materials and processes.
To improve clay handling skills.

| 1(ICT) | Objective:
discuss and question critically a range of visual and other info.
·1 Intro: Questions on the Green Man, what do you know already? Have you been to the Sweeps Festival? Have you seen any? Where? List and discuss your findings.·2 Watch PowerPoint examples of the Green Man. Look at artefacts. Discuss how different from and similar to other genres these are and where do they occur in other genres or cultures.·3 Research into the Green Man and the mysticism and spirit that surround it. What is their purpose around the country and the world?Outcomes: analysis of main features of the Green Man. Task. One page information document on the Green man. Comments on how objects are used to affect their audience. use KEY WORDS |
Finish document from lesson. Begin critical study by collecting images of the Green Man. Annotate or insert text boxes explaining what the image is of and what function it had. More marks for those who go beyond the purely descriptive. Use ICT if poss. Compare other ‘public art’ of times past. |
| 2 | Objective:
explore and develop ideas. To record from direct observation and from
secondary sources.
Task. Produce a series of observational drawings of leaves. Use pencil and a range of other expressive media. You may want to try to express the essence of seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. ·1 Students to make observational studies from the Green man and from photographic sources.·1 OR Self portrait with open mouth??? |

Objective: explore and develop ideas. Demo ‘black pen planning’ Look at good examples. Emphasis on tone, make drawings appear 3D. Using resource sheets and mirrors look at the features of your face, practice incorporating them and disguising them into leaf shapes Using your study sheets and research sheets. Design your own Green Man Mask. (In preparation of 3D work next lesson) Incorporate the features of the face into leaf forms. What media can you use to enhance your design sheets? Start in lesson, finish for homework. Annotation is important, an explanation of your ideas, how and why you changed them, will give you a higher level. |
Finish designs and Black pen planning ready for next week’s lesson. Those without complete designs will not start 3D work. |

·2 Objective: to explore processes and media.·3 Watch demonstration making Green man plaque. Stress textures and form, ‘sculpting techniques’.·4 Demonstration of the tools.·5 HOW WORK IS CAREFULLY WRAPPED AND STORED.·1 clearing up rota·2 Claywork begins |

| 5 | Objective:
‘develop and explore ideas making connections with the work of others’ ·1 Clay work continues, basic forms, features on Green Man plaques. Enclosed forms need to be pierced and that forms must be joined with ‘scratch and slip’ technique.·1 Show exemplar work.Outcome: basic forms created some detail work begun |
Technical notes
and illustrations of how the work is being made so far. (technical diary) Stress that notes with reference to ideas and research will gain marks. 1 or 2 weeks (up to teacher) but books into lesson next week regardless |
| 6,7&8 | Clay work continued. Develop textures, use oxides? When work is complete store on shelves to dry out, make sure all work is clearly named; inscribed or named using oxide | Evaluation and technical diary to be completed. Produce an illustrated essay/article discussing the Green Man. Give opinions as well as facts. Refer to your own work whenever possible. Ensure that you include your own opinions and re-creations of Green Men. |
| 9,10&11 | Glazing if work
